Gain your flexibility and go to the cloud

Pia Kantola is a successful international leader in the fields of consumer electronics, software and automation. Today she’s leading operations and customer experience for HMD Global – the home for Nokia Phones.

“If we look at the transformation especially in the supply chain, one major topic is the cycle-time, it’s speeding up. The amount of changes is happening so rapidly that the traditional business models don’t work anymore. For example, very integrated supply chains, working with the same partners throughout the years and having very static IT systems – that doesn’t work anymore in the consumer electronics industry.”

“I think the most important capability for a manufacturing company who really wants to go digital is the flexibility. In case you bet all their money in very static systems, think again, the world will change anyhow. You need to be flexible and everything must be going to the cloud. Regardless of the business model, markets or suppliers, don’t stick to the old business. The IT and legacy should not limit the implementation of changes. For all companies, the flexibility is the most important thing.”

Every company needs to be digital – In a way or another

Dr Tero Hottinen is working with emerging digital business and strategy development within Cargotec Plc. central digital team.

Everybody should understand and get the mindset that every company needs to become digital in a way or another, otherwise, you will lose the game.

In traditional manufacturing industries, the digitalization is very much still taken on the internal processes, like document handling and warehouse logistics, kind of enhancing your own operations to be more agile.

I would like to say to those who are still thinking what to make digital, that is a must, you need to be leaner and more efficient in internal processes, but don’t rely on that it would make a difference because it will become a commodity. You need to focus on how to add new service models or digital layers on top of your existing business – how to serve your customer better.

The next big wave – If you don’t understand and be capable to utilize machine learning and artificial intelligence, you will lose the game. It’s absolutely a must. It’s not a new trend but it’s something you have to live with.

How should manufacturing executives prepare themselves for digital transformation?

The second Friction Free Meetup was arranged as a C-Level Manufacturing Roundtable at Slush on 5 December 2018. The meetup gathered ten thought leaders from manufacturing ecosystem and it was co-hosted by Jakamo and Microsoft.

The topic of the meetup was: Changing the status quo in the manufacturing ecosystem – How should manufacturing executives prepare themselves for digital transformation?

The main focus in the discussion was how should leaders in the manufacturing ecosystem change their mindset of supply chain management and transform it into digital? The software is eating the world and manufacturing leaders need to eat software. That’s why the winners will be the companies who are capable to jump into the next paradigm of connected, flexible and dynamic software architecture. It’s crucial to keep a clear vision and find the right solutions for specific problems.

The game will be changed in the supply chain, again. By gaining the transparency and visibility in your supply network you will be one of the winners in the future.
